June 29-July 5, 2025

If you have been in church for any significant length of time you probably have heard of Spiritual Disciplines. The Disciplines are tools to be practiced and they are varied. As a follower of Christ, these disciplines should show up in our every day lives as we are being transformed into the image of Christ. I have learned to refer to these disciplines as practices because they need to be practiced throughout the days of my life. Some should show up daily others may be more seasonal or more of a weekly, monthly, or yearly practice. This month we are going to take a look at noticing and naming feelings, feeling them through prayer and responding as directed by the Spirit.

This week's Bible reading: Ecclesiastes 3:1-10

Focal Verses: Ecclesiastes 3:4

Theme: Spiritual Disciplines/Practices

Day 1: Practice noticing and naming feelings today. Ask God to make you aware of the feelings that come up throughout the day. They can be what every category: good/bad, helpful/unhelpful. Just notice and name, refrain from judging. Write them down if you can.

Day 2: JOY. Look for joy today. What was that moment? Did you allow yourself to really feel it? If time permits, write it down and give thanks to God for that gift.

Day 3: ANGER. Look for anger today. If it did not appear today ask God to show you a time when you were angry. What was underneath it? Did you allow the feeling to ebb and flow or did you stuff it? How did you respond to the situation that led to you feeling that way? Ask God to help you “listen” to that anger, bring it to him and learn.

Day 4: SADNESS. Look for sadness today. Did it come up or is it already lingering in your heart? Offer it to God in lament. Trust him with it. Is He asking you to respond in a away that you haven’t thought about or considered?

Day 5: PEACE. Look for peace today. Where did you feel peace today? What do you attribute to that feeling? Thank God for this moment.

Challenge: Throughout these weeks of noticing and name feelings, write out what you notice, name and feel all the feels. Use lines, shapes and color to enhance your creative expression if you choose. Pray through each situation and respond as the Holy Spirit leads you.
