A Psalm for Today

by Katie Harding on July 7, 2025

Sometimes in seasons of loss and devastation, the best action is inner action — giving ourselves time to grieve and lament. A time to feel our feelings and remember God’s faithfulness. The key to lamenting, as we see in the psalms of David, isn’t just pouring out our feelings in prayer, but it’s also a time of turning towards God, seeking His comfort, and trusting Him to provide.

Recently, when going through some poetry I wrote many years ago, I came across this poem and realized it’s a modern-day psalm of lament. With all the loss in Texas the past few days and receiving word of the death of another friend this week – the sixth in ten weeks – it was a comfort to read it again. I am sharing it with you in the hope it brings as much comfort to you on some of your hard days as it does to me on mine.

And as our hearts break for so many who are hurting, let us remember them each day in our prayers.

Father, My Lord

Father, my Lord, thou art God,

The giver of life, the breath of my soul.

When I am sad, I know I can sit at your feet

And cry my tears upon your lap.

When I am troubled, I can come to you and ask, Why?

And yet, without knowing the answer, I know all will be well.

Please provide the path for me to grieve,

And guide me through this season of sadness.

Let me praise you for the comfort I find in your presence,

For the peace that comes when I seek your face.

May I continue to be surrounded by your love,

encouraged by your grace, and strengthened by your Spirit.

For thou art God, my Father,

My Lord and my Savior.

Amen.
