COURSE DESCRIPTION

Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians offers a unique glimpse into first century Christianity. The letter highlights several major challenges encountered as members began to practice their understanding of the gospel proclaimed to them by the apostle Paul. The course will focus on the following topics:

  • Class 1 (August 28): Dissension and Division in the Corinthian Church
Paul appears to be losing his influence over the Corinthian believers as he tries to reassert his apostolic authority by stating some principles to help them navigate the divisions that seem to tear them apart. Required Reading: 1 Corinthians Chapters 1-4

  • Class 2 (September 25): Attitude and Behavior in Community Life
The Church at Corinth seems to have problems with Paul’s directives on matters relating to family relationships, human sexuality, liturgy, behavior in worship, the Lord’s Supper, and religious freedom. Required Reading: 1 Corinthians Chapters 5-11

  • Class 3 (October 30): The Proper Use of Spiritual Gifts (Charismata)
Some of the Corinthians were under the mistaken notion that the ultimate sign of one’s spirituality was the ability to speak in tongues. This led to some elevating tongues during worship in a way that was disruptive and not edifying to church life.
Required Reading: 1 Corinthians Chapters 12-14

  • Class 4 (November 20): Resurrection and the Moral Consequences
Particularly problematic for the Corinthians was the issue of resurrection and its moral

consequences. Would people rise in their bodies? What would happen to the Christians surviving when Christ returns? Required Reading: 1 Corinthians Chapters 15-16

  • Class 5 (December 18): Review and Conclusion
Join us for an interactive discussion as we review Paul’s pastoral responses to first century challenges and their continuing impact on our contemporary Christian landscape. This class will be held in person with a Zoom option available. Class certificates will also be presented.
